Meet Linda: How adult learning helped her rediscover confidence, community and joy

When Linda decided to take her first adult education class in 2021, she had no idea how much it would change her life. Born and raised in Hackney, she began her journey at New City College on a Level 1 introductory course, and has since progressed all the way to Level 4 in Data Analytics.

“I wanted to do something positive for myself,” Linda says. “Studying again has helped me in so many ways. Education helps you stay connected. You feel part of something, and it makes you happy.”

Growing through learning

For Linda, adult education has been about much more than qualifications. Returning to the classroom gave her structure, purpose and a sense of belonging.

It’s made a big difference. It got me out of the house, socialising and mixing with other people, which has been great for my mental health.

“It’s made a big difference. It got me out of the house, socialising and mixing with other people, which has been great for my mental health. I’ve met so many new friends. It’s even helped me in family life — I can now help my daughter with the skills I’ve learned. Overall, it’s made me happier and more active.”

Her choice to study data analysis couldn’t have come at a better time. With data-related roles projected to grow by 33% over the next five years, Linda is part of a new generation of adults preparing for the digital future.

Why adult education matters

Linda believes passionately that everyone should have the same chance she’s had — and worries that cuts to adult education funding will deny that opportunity to others.

“Life keeps changing, and you have to keep up with it,” she explains. “Education helps you stay updated and connected. Without it, people can get stuck. It also helps people who feel isolated — it gets you out, meeting others, being part of something. Adult education brings less depression, more happiness, more skills, and more people into work.”

For me, learning hasn’t just been about getting qualifications. It’s helped me find confidence, community and joy. And I think everyone deserves that same chance.
