Meet Magnus: Returning to study after ill health and finding a new direction

For Magnus, returning to education was about rebuilding his confidence and reconnecting with the working world after a period of ill health. Wanting to explore new technologies and understand how the digital landscape is changing, he enrolled on the Prompt Engineering course at New City College, a short, accessible introduction that helped him take the first step back.

He speaks about how valuable it has been to study alongside other adults, sharing ideas, seeing different perspectives and gaining encouragement from people on similar journeys. The course has reminded him of the skills he already had and given him new ones, helping to restore the confidence he lost while out of work.

Adult education has become a bridge for Magnus; a way to move toward employment, develop new interests and re-engage with his future. But he’s clear: none of this would be possible without funded access. Cuts to adult education would make learning far harder to reach, limiting the opportunities adults need to return to work and rebuild their lives.

His message is straightforward: “It’s a good opportunity to learn new things, meet new people and grow your confidence.” For Magnus, adult learning isn’t just a course it’s a pathway back to the life he wants.
