Meet Erin
Starting a career in childcare can feel daunting, but for Erin, her apprenticeship at New City College has been a journey of learning, discovery, and growing confidence. From welcoming children into the nursery to exploring creative activities, every day brings new opportunities.
My favourite part of the day is when parents drop off their children, it’s great to see them come in smiling and happy to see me. I just love working with children.
I also find it so rewarding to see children I’ve looked after grow - from when they first joined to now, when they’re talking and asking questions.
When I was doing my Level Two qualification, I was only working with 3 to 5 year olds, and I wanted to gain experience with all age groups. This apprenticeship has helped me do that. I’ve now had the chance to work in the ‘baby room’, all the way up to 5 year olds.
Moving between the rooms has taught me how to change my approach for children at different stages of their development
Our days are busy. We prepare a lot of meals, and we go outside into the garden twice a day. This really helps give the children time to explore, build, and discover.
We try to do as many messy activities as possible. Each week, we do cooking, painting, or water play. These activities help the children with language - noticing colours, feeling textures, and exploring materials. All the children love getting messy and learning through play.
You don’t always realise that you’re learning while working.
The apprenticeship was perfect for me - if I had questions, I could ask my colleagues, and the college supported me every step of the way.
Since completing some of my qualifications, I’ve been trusted with more responsibilities. I don’t need to ask as many questions now because I’ve developed more confidence and common sense.
I would recommend an apprenticeship - you learn so much, doing something you love.
