Meet Linda: How adult learning helped her rediscover confidence, community and joy

Linda’s journey shows how adult education can transform not just careers, but confidence, connection and wellbeing. Born and raised in Hackney, she returned to learning in 2021, starting with a Level 1 introductory course at New City College. Today, she has progressed all the way to Level 4 in Data Analytics, a fast-growing field with significant demand for skilled workers.

But for Linda, the impact has gone far beyond qualifications. Returning to the classroom gave her structure, purpose and a sense of belonging she didn’t realise she’d been missing. She talks about how learning helped her get out of the house, meet new people and feel more connected to her community, all of which improved her mental health and overall happiness.

Education has also strengthened her family life. She now feels confident supporting her daughter with her own learning, showing how adult education has a ripple effect that benefits households and communities alike.

Linda believes strongly that every adult should have access to the same opportunities she’s had, especially at a time when digital skills are in high demand and life is changing quickly. She worries that cuts to adult education funding will deny others the chance to grow, connect and progress.

For her, the message is simple: learning brings confidence, community and joy, and that opportunity should belong to everyone.
