Meet Cameron: The forklift driver turning data into opportunity

Cameron’s journey shows exactly why adult education matters in a world transformed by technology. Working full-time as a forklift driver, he could see the job market shifting, with data and digital skills becoming essential across every industry. Determined to future-proof his career, he enrolled on the Level 3 Data Analytics course at New City College, training in coding, data interpretation and analytical skills alongside his day job.

Returning to education as an adult has changed Cameron’s relationship with learning. He talks about valuing the opportunity in a way he didn’t when he was younger, finding the teaching practical and relevant, and benefiting from the college environment, especially the library, which gives him space to study he doesn’t have at home.

But he’s also clear about the barriers adults face. With bills, rent and family responsibilities, many people want to upskill but simply can’t afford it. That’s why free and funded adult courses matter, and why cuts to adult education risk shutting out the very people who can help fill the UK’s growing digital and technical skills gaps.

For Cameron, the impact has been transformative, both personally and professionally. He sees education as a way to build a better future, increase his earning potential and contribute more to the economy.
